A Medicare Advantage PPO or Preferred Provider Organization allows their members flexibility to see in network and out of network doctors and hospitals. It is however recommended to see an in-network doctor because the copayments and other out of pocket expenses are much less than an out-of-network facility. PPO’s also provide the flexibility to see specialists without obtaining a referral from a primary physician.
A Medicare Advantage Plan differs from a supplement or Medigap plan in that it becomes your primary and only health plan. Original Medicare and the red, white, and blue card will not need to be used. Most often Medicare Advantage PPO plans also include prescriptions drug coverage as well. So a Medicare Part D Prescriptions (PDP) plan will not need to be purchased separately. Medicare Supplemental Insurance or MediGap insurance does not include Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage.
Medicare Advantage PPO often include dental, vision, and even hearing insurance at no additional cost!
